An oil painting on canvas by George William Mote (British, 1832-1909). A large oil landscape showing a panoramic view of the countryside surrounding the town of Guildford in the English county of Surrey with cattle resting in the foreground and sunlight reflected from a distant lake; a rare and idyllic view of this lovely home county before its twentieth-century development. The painting is signed and dated ‘G.W. Mote 1881’ in the lower right corner. It is framed in a gold tone wooden frame.
Primarily self-taught, George Mote developed a recognized specialty for landscape and coastal scenes in Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Wales. He exhibited widely and with success during his lifetime and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards. Mote exhibited fifteen paintings at the Royal Academy (1857-73), and 18 works at the Royal Society of British Artists, as well as exhibitions at the British Institution and the Royal Hibernian Academy.
