Wood and Brass Ship's Binnacle

Item Details

A wood and brass ship’s binnacle. This mid 20th-century nautical compass safeguards the maritime navigation of the vessel. The binnacle instrument consists of a round wooden stand upon which a plinth is mounted and it has a plaque on the base that reads ‘NV Observator, Rotterdam’. Two magnetic balls (red and green for port and starboard) on either side of the marine binnacle to help with magnetic disruptions to navigation. There is a brass cap that covers the compass and has a built-in oil lamp for illumination and a brass tube on the side for rolled maps.
