1866 Gustav Dore Wood Engraving from "The Legend of the Wandering Jew"

Item Details

A stunning 1866 wood engraving on wove paper, carved by an artist named Hyer and printed by J. Best after an original illustration by very well-listed French artist Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (1832 – 1883). The illustration was created for the 1866 elephant folio The Legend of the Wandering Jew, which included 12 illustrations by the artist and an explanatory introduction text. It was published by London’s Cassell, Petter and Galpin. The folio was housed in a green hard-covered sleeve with gilt embossed text. This print is signed in-plate by both artists, and is captioned as followed to its lower edge:
‘Trees intertwined with snakes he walks beneath,
Safe thro’ dark valleys ripe with hideous death.’
It is matted in off-white and presented behind glass in a thin wooden frame with black finish and a hanging wire. The other 11 prints from the folio and the original folio itself are all also included in this sale.
