Antique Charles Bernard de Billy Etching "The Victory of Faith" after St. George Hare
Item Details
An antique etching by Charles Bernard de Billy of The Victory of Faith by St. George Hare (British, 1857-1933). The 1891 painting upon which this print is based was exhibited at the Royal Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Hare’s depiction of two nude female martyrs sleeping peacefully together on the eve of their deaths was very popular. (The original oil painting now belongs to the National Gallery in Australia.) This version bears an embossed stamp on the lower left corner which identifies it as being from the Columbian Exposition showing. A label affixed to the back provides information about the artist, etcher, and the subject matter. Hare was a member of the Royal Academy and the founder of the Chelsea Arts Club. The print comes in a period gold tone frame.
