An oil painting on canvas titled The Madame by contemporary Ohio artist Barbara A. Wood. This piece depicts a middle-aged woman dressed in a 1920’s style, wearing an adorned velvet hat with veil, while she plays with a long pearl necklace and gazes to the lower right. This painting is signed by the artist to the lower right corner. Presented without glass, beneath a wide linen blue mat with a gilt fillet, and house in a wood frame with a gilt finish. A pair of ‘Marty Scherer’ gallery labels are affixed to the verso.
Barbara A. Wood is best known for her modernist genre oil paintings involving female subjects. Wood began her formal artistic training at the Traphagen School of Fashion Design. Further pursued her artistic career she continued her education at the Art Students League, New York City. After moving to Los Angeles, she went on to study at the Parsons School of Art and posteriorly at the Pasadena School of Fine Art, in doing so established her distinctive expressionist style paintings and content for which she became recognized.
