A large size original oil painting on canvas titled Action hunting scene with eight dogs by listed artist Edmund Henry Osthaus (1858-1928), signed in the lower left corner. The painting illustrates a fall landscape with the pack of pointers and setters in pursuit with one dog tumbling down the embankment. The provenance of the painting is noted from 1965 to 1985 on a typed note affixed to the back. The painting is housed sans glass in a thin, simple wood frame with hanging wire and wood supports on the verso.
Edmund Henry Osthaus was born in Germany and educated at the Royal Academy of Arts in Dusseldorf where he was influenced by Andreas Muller, Ernst Deger, and Christian Kroener. He immigrated to the United States in 1883, and was principal at the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts before returning to full-time studio painting and work with his prize winning sporting dogs in the field.
