Frederic Matys Thursz Abstract Painting
Item Details
An impressive color abstract painting on canvas by well important post-war contemporary artist Frederic Matys Thursz (Morocco, 1930-1992), untitled, dated 1968. The colossal painting is done in a nearly monochromatic red palette with a bit of black used in contrast. The rich texture and depth of color achieved by the artist’s signature technique layering viscous boiled paint and glazing while continually reworking the surface, the result being a surprisingly detailed surface despite the lack of imagery. The artist was quoted in a German catalogue describing the importance of color; ‘It is chemistry, alchemy. To give the illusion of red I use purple and add green, which makes the red verge on violet. Then another layer of green and a passage of violet is needed. The result of these overlappings is a reddish glow. Then I add vermilion and the red becomes so deep that it is more red than real red.’ (see link below) The painting is seemingly initialed by the artist on the verso, top left corner and simply framed in a thin wood frame painted beige. A digital image of the notarized letter authenticating the painting written by a fellow University of Kentucky faculty member and friend, dated December 2008 is included in the photographs as well as a copy included with the painting.
Frederic Matys Thursz was born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1930 then moved with his family to the United States in 1941, he was educated at Queen’s College and Columbia University.
