Antique Persian Qashqai Area Rug
Item Details
An antique Persian Qashqai tribal area rug. This hand-knotted wool rug is rendered in an abrashed palette of madder red, deep midnight blue, ivory, and gold. The rug has an unusual design, which begins with an asymmetrically plotted midnight blue field featuring a hexagonal medallion two-thirds of the distance to the top of the field. As with many Qashqai rugs, there are small medallions in the field’s top corners, but, unlike traditionally designed rugs, a mirrored pair appear not at the field’s lower corners but floating in the lower third of the field, separated by a pryamid, which is not repeated elsewhere in the design. Meanwhile, the field is filled with female human figures, peacocks, pheasants, boteh, rectilinear florets, four legged animals, S shapes, and other symbolic motifs. The rug has compound, unresolved borders, including two with meandering carnation patterns over red and a primary border featuring turtle-like shapes and boteh over ivory. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with unbound natural wool warp fringe. It is unmarked.
