Original 1919 Reds Photo
Item Details
An original first generation 1919 Cincinnati Reds team photo. The photographer’s stamp is on the back, ‘J. R. Schmidt 1557 St. Charles Place, Hyde Park Cincinnati, O’. There is a written notation on the back, done in black fountain pen that has the first and last names of the players and ‘Official Group Penant Winning Reds’. The players are in uniform, sitting on some wood bleachers on the field. The stands behind the players has fans arriving for the game. The photo is not dated per se, but the notation stating that it’s the ‘Penant Winning Reds’ dates it, as the Reds only pennant win of this era was in 1919. The names listed (as they are written on the back) are: ‘Back Row – Sherwood Magee, Eddie Roush, Morris Rath, Hod Eller, Harry Sallee, Eddie Gerner, Ray Fisher, Jimmy Ring, Heinie Groh, Rube Bressler, Hank Schreiber and Roy Mitchell Front Row – Jake Daubert, Charley See, Walter Ruether, Pat Moran, Bill Rariden, Nick Allen, Ivy Wingo, Greasy Neale, Pat Duncan, Adolfo Luque, Jimmy Smith, Larry Kopf’. The Reds went on to defeat the Chicago White Sox in the infamous 1919 World Series where some of the White Sox players took bribes from some gamblers to through the Series.
Condition
- the emulsion on the negative had been rubbed off, hence the black spots on the photo
- the white spots is paper loss; the third player from the left on the top row has paper loss on the cap area
- the black border is the framing of the negative – which in this era would have been from the glass plate negative.
