Outstanding Folk Art Portrait of a Lawyer, Possibly James Seymour
Item Details
An outstanding folk art portrait of a lawyer, possibly James Seymour. This early 19th century, oil on canvas painting depicts a gentleman with grey hair dressed in formal, period attire. He sits in a Classical armchair next to a table with a green leather top. His right hand clutches a book while a four-volume set of James Kent’s Commentaries on American Law is displayed atop the table. The composition is backed by a pair of tasseled, red curtains, which have been drawn to reveal an open window. The painting is ready to hang in a contemporary, gilt-finished frame. According to the consignor, this painting was purchased from the home of well-known folk art dealer and collector, Peter Tillou, in the 1980s.
