Oil on canvas by listed artist William Otis Swett (American, 1859 – 1938). A bucolic scene, this painting depicts sheep grazing in a meadow, with some resting beneath the shade of a grove of a trees to the center of the work. The brushwork is expressive and finely textured, with rich coloration. The work is presented in a gorgeous ornate gilt gesso over wood frame with sculpted leaves, with both beaded and ovate borders. The painting is signed to the lower right corner. William Swett was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1859. The painter studied in Munich, Paris, Belgium and Holland. He has also exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Salmagundi Club. He is considered a landscape and marine painter and was a pupil of James Whistler and H.G Dearth.
