Item Details

An original 1972 oil painting on canvas by well-listed artist Jacob Pfeiffer (born 1936), titled Trapper. The painting depicts a Native American man riding a horse across a snowy landscape towards a glowing orange sun, as he leads a second horse pulling the carcass of a black bear. The painting is signed and dated to the lower left. It is presented in a rustic wooden frame with carved twisting outer border and a hanging wire. The piece’s title is carved into the base of the frame. Born in Romania, Pfeiffer was three years old when his father left to fight for Russia during WWII. After living for a short time in Austria, he and his mother were forced to flee, traveling in the night and hiding during the day for five months as they worked to reunite with his father. Because of his experience, he felt an immediate kinship to the history of Native Americans, as he was also displaced from his home and had his usual way of life ripped from him and his family.
