1972 Red Skelton Offset Lithograph "Golf King"

Item Details

A 1972 offset lithograph titled Golf King after Richard Bernard ‘Red’ Skelton (1913-1997). This portrait depicts a sad looking clown in torn clothes and makeup consisting of a large red nose and white lips with a broken golf stick, wearing a small red and gold crown atop his head. The piece is signed by the artist by hand and in plate to the bottom right. This art is presented behind a red and white mat behind glass in a white gesso frame with a hanging wire to the verso.

Red Skelton was a comedian after his father, oftentimes producing the same kind of clown make-up and routines from his mother’s recollections. He was in vaudeville, broadway, television, and radio, performing different characters such as the homeless clown ‘Freddie the Freeloader’ and skits like ‘Doughnut Dunkers.’ He landed an hour-long spot on CBS named The Red Skelton Hour and making public appearances to perform many times yearly. He was known as a man who wanted to make people laugh, and despite his successful career in radio and television, Red Skelton was also well-known for his paintings and the sale of his prints and lithographs.
