A 1721 copy of The Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, the first edition edited by John Urry (1666-1715). The title page notes that the work has been ‘compared with the former editions, and many valuable MSS [ manuscripts ] out of which, three tales are added which were never before printed’. This work is purportedly the first to print ‘Gamelyn’ and ‘The Tale of Beryn’ which where are ascribed to Chaucer, but were not actually authored by him. Urry died in 1715 and the work was published after his death, printed by William Bowyer. Timothy Thomas completed the final revisions and also wrote the preface and glossary. The title page features a vignette of Chaucer’s tomb with a portrait of the author on the facing page, while the rest of the book is illustrated throughout with The Canterbury Tales featuring twenty-six engravings. The antique books is bound in leather with raised bands on the spine with gilt title and marbled fore-edges. There are 56 pages prior to the main content, 626 pages of main content and 82 glossary pages. 764 total pages.
