Joseph Paxton Antique Hand-Tinted Lithograph "The Duke of Devonshire's Water Lily"
Item Details
An antique 19th-century hand-tinted lithograph of The Duke of Devonshire’s Water Lily from Sir Joseph Paxton’s (British, 1801-1865) monthly floricultural publication, the Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants. It is set behind glass and pastel pink mats within a gilt-toned wood frame with a wire to the verso for hanging.
Beginning as a garden assistant to the Duke of Devonshire, Sir Joseph Paxton’s interests and publications in botany lead to an interest in conservatory design and construction. This culminated in his landmark masterpiece, the Crystal Palace, in London, England, which was inspired by the keeping of hothouse lilies such as this one.
