Vintage Roberta di Camerino Cut Soprarizzo Velvet Handbag
Item Details
A vintage Roberta di Camerino cut soprarizzo velvet handbag. This Italian top handle bag is constructed from a fawn colored cut velvet in a basketweave pattern, featuring a flap front, wrapped velvet handle, gold tone hardware and a gold tone horse bit shaped turn lock to the top. The flap lifts to reveal a fawn velvet and cognac leather slip pocket. The interior is lined in cognac leather with an open pocket and zippered pocket lined in a sienna moiré, and “Made in Italy by ‘Roberta’ di Camerino” stamped in gold foil, and includes original hand mirror. Roberta di Camerino was started by Giuliana Coen Camerino in post-WWII Italy, 1945, and developed a cult following thanks to celebrity fans such as Coco Chanel, Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor. Camerino was one of the first designers to take fabrics designed for clothing and furniture use and reimagine them as handbags, such as soprarizzo velvet, a complex velvet that she commissioned from the Tessiture Luigi Bevilacqua, who were known for ecclesiastical and upholstery velvets created on antique looms.
