Clintel Steed Oil Painting on Canvas "View of P.R."
Item Details
An oil painting on canvas titled View of P.R., created in 2015 by listed artist Clintel Steed (New York, b. 1977). This abstract work features two stretched rectangular canvases affixed together, forming a single, continuous composition. Lush green foliage, tropical plants, and delineated outlines suggestive of architectural forms are rendered with thick textural impasto and gestural expressionistic brushstrokes. The work is signed, titled, and dated to the verso.
Clintel Steed grew up in a predominantly African American and Pentecostal community, which is an evident influence to his paintings. His work is a personal dialogue with African American culture, contemporary politics, and the Biblical struggle between good and evil. Stylistically, much of his work is rendered in thick impasto and expressionistic brushstrokes loosely applied throughout his compositions. He acquired his formal artistic training at the Art Institute of Chicago receiving a BFA in 1999 and his MFA from Indiana University in 2001. During his artistic career, he presented his work in multiple locations including the Indiana University Art Museum, New York Studio School and the National Academy of Design, among others.
