Late 19th Century Ethiopian Cavalry Saber

An Ethiopian cavalry saber with tooled leather scabbard from the reign of Menelik II (1844-1913), who was in power from 1889-1913. It features a stirrup form, nickel-plated brass hilt, un-covered wooden grip, and lion’s head pommel. The single-edge, fullered blade has been etched with foliate designs. The ricasso bears a Lion of Judah to one side and Ge’ez inscription above ‘T. M.’ with profile of Menelik II to the verso. The curved blade is approximately 32.5’ (83 cm) long. The handmade scabbard has been etched with a variety of designs, including the Arabic star and crescent, and bears the names Akamed Hussein and Mohamed Hussein. Menelik II was in conflict with Italians who were trying to expand their territory.
