Sadao Watanabe Original 1962 Signed Limited Edition Woodblock "Escape (Flight into Egypt)"

An original signed limited edition 1962 woodblock on prepared mulberry paper by well-listed Japanese print maker Sadao Watanabe (渡辺 禎雄, 1913 – 1996), titled Escape (The Flight into Egypt) (エジプト逃避, Ejiputo tōhi). The image depicts Mary, mother of Jesus, cradling her baby closely as they ride a donkey into Egypt, traveling by night so as not to be seen. A bird in flight above them guides their journey. Artist signature and date are marked in white ink to the lower right, where the print is titled in Japanese and numbered 116 in an edition of 200. This work is mounted behind deep navy blue mat, under glass in a beveled wood frame with a black and speckled silver finish and a wire to the verso. This piece retailed at the reputable Closson Gallery of Cincinnati as indicated by the gold foil sticker attached to the verso.
