An original untitled oil painting by Modernist painter Marion Messinger (American, 1908 – 1989). This painting is oil on canvas and depicts abstract figures in bright cobalt, lime, teal, pink, wine, black, and white tones. It is set within a gilt-tone wood frame and was produced c. 1944-47. A tag from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is attached to the back.
Marion Gettelson Messinger was a Modernist and Spiritual Abstractionist painter who was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1908. Messinger studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in Europe, before returning to Chicago where she became inspired by French Modernist paintings at the 1933 World’s Fair. She settled in Los Angeles in 1940, where she worked until her retirement to Pebble Beach, California in 1965. Her work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Pasadena Art Institute, and Labaudt Gallery, and has been housed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
