1885 "Personal Memoirs of US Grant" First Edition

A complete two volume hardcover set of the Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant, first edition, published 1885 by Charles L. Webster & Co. of New York. Both volumes are bound in green cloth hardcovers with gilt lettering and designs, and illustrated with engravings. Featured is a facsimile of President Grant’s inscription to ‘the American soldier and sailor’ and signature. Notably, Vol. II is signed in pencil to the front flyleaf by a former owner – ‘Ja. F Askew June 18 1886’. James F. Askew (1844-1919) was a judge in Kentucky, a delegate from Scott County to the Kentucky Constitutional Convention of 1891, and had fought on the Confederate side of the Civil War as a Private in the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry.
