Doña Rosa Signed Black Pottery Vase
Item Details
A signed pottery vase by world renowned potter Doña Rosa (Mexican, d. 1980) of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. This vase has a fluted, round shape with a wide, rimmed mouth, in the traditional burnished, wood fired solid black clay. The burnishing has given the piece a glossy, almost silvery appearance, and it is signed ‘Dona Rosa/Oax-Mex’ to the underside.
Doña Rosa is known for her modern development of the use of black clay, ‘barro negro,’ in Mexican pottery, and using a burnishing technique to compress the clay platelets so that the ware is exceptionally strong, glossy and has a rich, deep onyx black color. Her work is collected and prized among aficionados of the Mexican pottery tradition, and her family still operates her workshop in its original location. Please see the link below for a video of Doña Rosa making a vessel on her rudimentary potter’s ‘wheel.’
