An oil painting on canvas of a landscape by well-listed German-born artist John J. Hammer (1842-1906). This work features a grassy field extending to the background, spotted with trees silhouetted against a cloudy grey sky. The work is signed in black to the lower right. Housed in a gold-tone wood frame.
Hammer immigrated to the United States and studied at the National Academy of Design. He was known for his landscapes and genre scenes and his work has been shown at many art institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, among others.
