Item Details
Pastel on paper
An ink and pastel drawing on colored paper titled Maternity by Venezuelan-born artist Ricardo Morin (b. 1954), dated 1974. This work features a half-body portrait and three-quarter view of a mother holding a baby in her arms. The woman stands in a vague interior and gazes out toward the viewer with a serious expression on her face. The work exhibits a combination of contour and modeling visible in the pastel application, and matte forms visible in the application of black ink. The work is signed and dated by the artist in pencil to the upper left. Presented unframed and unmounted as a loose sheet.
Morin immigrated to the United States from Venezuela in 1972. Based in New York and New Jersey, he received his B.F.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his M.F.A. at Yale University. His work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Bronx Museum of the Arts; the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York; the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts in Brooklyn, New York; and many others. He is most well-known for his non-objective abstract paintings that often exhibit a combination of linear delineation and spontaneous fluidity.
