Item Details

A Japanese Satsuma ware ‘Thousand Face’ vase from the late 19th-Century Meiji period (1868-1912). This footed vase with a fluted body features finely hand-painted images of Buddhist arhats in gold and brown tones and a spotted moriage dragon wrapped around the entire piece. A hole has been carved to the base, obstructing part of the signature. The signature reads ‘Great Japan’ (大日本 Dai Nippon), ‘Kyoto’ (京都), possibly a variant Kinkōzan mark (partially illegible, 金…山, Kin…zan), and the large lower mark within a cartouche is the mark of the Yasuda Trading Company. (安田 Yasuda).
