West African Beaded Yoruba Crown
Item Details
A beaded bird motif crown made by the Yoruba people of West Africa. The bead embroidered crown appears to be made with a solid base, over which a substrate of burlap or woven cloth has been added. Thousands of beads have been sewn, entirely covering the crown form. The crown design depicts a central large face created of horizontal red beads with a striped mouth, light blue round eyes and a protruding long blue nose. Surrounding the face are several colorful birds with their beaks touching the center and tails extending outward. The crown is topped by a tall blue beaded stalk topped with a brown beaded bird and strings of hanging beads.
