An original 1982 signed color stencil print on kozo paper by very well-listed Japanese folk artist and printmaker Sadao Watanabe (渡辺 禎雄, 1913 – 1996), titled Nativity. The piece is printed in simple black linework with faint stenciled areas of blue, red, and yellow accents. It depicts Joseph leaning tenderly over Mary as she holds baby Jesus in her arms. The print is signed both in English and Japanese and is dated in pencil to the lower margin; a red artist’s seal is also printed there. Watanabe is associated with the mingei Japanese folk art movement, and exclusively made work exploring the Biblical narrative. His work has been exhibited in prominent institutions around the world, including the Vatican Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the White House.
