Item Details

An oil painting on canvas titled Portrait of Miles Davis by listed artist Clintel Steed (New York, b. 1977), dated 1994. The painting depicts an abstracted image of American jazz trumpeter, Miles Davis with his finger over his mouth. The image is heavily packed with vibrant linear outlines rendered in vivid neon and phosphorescent colors. The central area is surrounded by psychedelic rainbow hues that glow and smoothly gradate into one another. The work is signed and dated in red to the lower right. A pair of d-rings are affixed to the verso for hanging. For more information about the artist, see the link below.

Clintel Steed grew up in a predominantly African American and Pentecostal community, this is an evident influence to his paintings. His work is a personal dialogue with African American culture, contemporary politics, and the Biblical struggle between good and evil. Much of his work is rendered in a thick impasto technique featuring expressionistic brushstrokes loosely applied throughout his compositions. He acquired his formal artistic training at the Art Institute of Chicago receiving a BFA in 1999 and his MFA from Indiana University in 2001. During his artistic career, he presented his work in multiple locations including the Indiana University Art Museum, New York Studio School and the National Academy of Design, among others.
