A graphite drawing on paper titled The Mirror by highly regarded artist William Anthony (b. 1934), dated 1998. This drawing depicts a naked woman wearing heels and her reflection in a full body mirror. Delineated in sketchy outlines, the figure is depicted with an oversized head, a toothy smile, and unusual body proportions. The work exhibits Anthony’s signature illustration style. The work is signed and dated to the lower left. Handwriting to the verso reads the title, date, and a photocopied descriptive label is enclosed in a plastic envelope adhered to the verso. Presented under glass with a white mat and a beige wood frame.
Throughout his education and training, William Anthony attended Yale University, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the Art Students League in New York. As an illustrator and painter, he is known for his satirical work critical of art criticism and art history. His work has been exhibited at countless institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Paula Cooper Gallery, and the Stuart Katz Gallery, to name a few.
