An Emily B. Waite signed original oil on canvas of Woman’s Portrait.An original oil painting on canvas by well-listed American artist Emily Burling Waite (Massachusetts/Rhode Island; 1887 – 1980), circa 1940. Skillfully rendered with carefully mixed pigments and lovingly, fearlessly applied paint, this portrait depicts a seated woman in white, donning a crisp dress and a fresh cropped ’do, smiling warmly as she holds the red beaded coral necklace around her neck, pulling it forward so as to show an audience. Artist signature is signed in red paint to the lower right. This work is not framed.

Emily B. Waite is best known for her oil portraits, still life paintings, and etchings. She began her formal artistic training at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where she studied from 1908 through 1910 under Philip Leslie Hale and Francis Luis Mora. In 1910 she received the Paige Traveling Scholarship and traveled extensively for two years throughout France, Spain, the Netherlands, Czechoslovakia and Italy, studying and copying master paintings. In 1959 she returned to Europe, primarily to study fresco painting in Northern Italy. Waite’s work is represented in the collections of numerous distinguished institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D. C.; the Newport Art Museum, Rhode Island; and the Library of Congress, Washington, D. C., among many others. For more information about the artist, see the links below. Condition

- edges and corners of canvas are worn. Abrasions and minor loss throughout painting, mainly close to outer edges. Craquelure and accretion across painting. Creases on painting surface near outer edges from pressure of underlying stretcher bars.
