Item Details

An original colored mezzotint print by British printer Arthur L. Cox (1840 – 1917). The print’s imagery was created by combining several elements of works by extremely well-listed French Rococo painter Jean-Baptiste Pater (1695 – 1736). The piece depicts several figures in ornate Rococo outfits lounging in a wooden area near stone ruins. The print is signed in pencil by Cox to the lower right, and has an embossed ovular stamp that reads ‘ZSYG’ to the lower left. The print is presented behind glass in a wooden frame with gold tone finish and pink suede lining. Mezzotint printing is a detailed, rare process created by burnishing a copper plate with a sharp ridged bevel called a rocker so that it’s surface will absorb ink like a sponge. The rough surface is then burnished back to varying degrees of smoothness to reveal the desired image.
