An original 19th century oil painting on canvas by well-listed Ohio artist and teacher Silas Martin (1841 – 1906). This stunningly accurate maritime painting depicts a massive sailboat floating across choppy water in front a bright sky filled with layers of fluffy clouds. The piece is signed in black paint to the lower right. It is presented in a wooden frame black and gold tone finishes. A hanging wire is attached to the verso. Martin studied under prolific Cincinnati painter John Witt (1840 – 1901). After spending much of his life traveling extensively and living across the country, Martin spent the last 7 years of his life serving as the head of the Art Department at Ohio State University.
Condition
- accretion across painting; would benefit from professional cleaning. A scratched area of paint loss is visible to lower left corner of painting. A small rip in the canvas on the boat’s hull has been repaired and inpainted. A few very light scratches and scuffs to frame’s finish.
