Item Details
An original 19th century oil painting on canvas by well-listed Ohio artist and teacher Silas Martin (1841 – 1906). The painting depicts a flat, grassy field surrounded by bushy trees. A pair of large hay bales sit in the center of the field, creating variety in the otherwise simple landscape. The piece is signed in black paint to the lower right. Martin studied under prolific Cincinnati painter John Witt (1840 – 1901). After spending much of his life traveling extensively and living across the country, Martin spent the last 7 years of his life serving as the head of the Art Department at Ohio State University.
