Item Details
A watercolor painting on paper by Cincinnati artist John Jacob Stanley, dated 1969. To the lower right, the work is signed and dated by the artist in black ink. Under a single layer of pale brown linen mat, the piece is housed under glass in a painted black and silver-tone beveled wood frame. A torn label on the verso center and a variety of ink and graphite numeric inscriptions are present to the paper backing. With hanging wire to the verso, the item is ready to hang.
Stanley (Alliance, OH 1929 – Florence, KY 2005) was a local Cincinnati artist who worked in Cincinnati, New York, and Hebron, Kentucky. After graduating from Alliance High School, Stanley went on to study at the Art Academy of Cincinnati where he studied under Arthur Helwig, Charles Cutler and Paul Chidlaw. He also attended the Yale Summer Arts School where he studied under Josef Albers and Peter Blume. There was a three-year break in Stanley’s art education while he served in the United States Military, eventually graduating in 1955. Stanley worked in prints, oils, and watercolor paints; many of his prints provide social commentary.
In a photorealist style, Stanley’s Cincinnati cityscape depicts a scene on East 5th Street between Walnut and Vine Street as viewed from East 4th Street. The work depicts the sculptural fountain The Genius of Water in front of the Sheraton-Gibson Hotel and other historic buildings. A variety of figures in contemporary dress walk around the square and sit on the fountain’s edge.
