Robert F. Williams Oil Painting on Double-Sided Canvas “Wisteria / Winter Landscape”

An oil painting on double-sided canvas titled Wisteria / Winter Landscape by listed artist Robert F. Williams (American, 1881-1972), dated 1941. To the lower left corner, the work has been signed and dated by the artist in black paint. With a gold-tone fillet and without glass, the item is housed in a wooden gilt gesso frame with decorative embellishments in the corners. The winterscape on the canvas verso is partially inscribed with the artist’s signature in the upper right corner. To the frame verso upper right are a paper artist’s label and an exhibition label.

Robert F. WIlliams studied in New York under William Merritt Chase (American, 1849-1916), and worked in an impressionist manner throughout his career. This work was completed shortly after a well known series of national parks was exhibited at the New York World’s Fair in 1940.

Condition

Under a blacklight, both the compositions, including signatures, are clean. Paint loss to the canvas is present along the frame edge along the left, bottom, and right sides, possibly the result of frame-rub. Cracks in the paint are present to the frame edge of the winterscape on the verso. Minor wear to the frame resulting in gold-tone paint loss and chipping of gesso. Chipping is focused on the inside of the upper left and lower left frame corners; scratches resulting in paint loss are present throughout.
