John Jacob Stanley Original Painting "Disappearing Act"
Item Details
An original signed folk art oil on canvas titled Disappearing Act by listed artist John Jacob Stanley (American, Ohio, 1929-2005). The 1984 social commentary work depicts in vivid colors and in a sand-textured technique, a strange and macabre sideshow act with a bikini-clad circus woman in high-heeled black boots, welding a black whip over a terrified naked baby sliding down a green slide into the cavernous jaws of a black leopard, with a sign proclaiming ‘Hokus Pokus Disappearing Act 1’ in blue and yellow. The painting is signed and dated in gold to the lower left and displayed in a beveled black frame with gilded inner liner.
John Jacob Stanley studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati under Paul Chidlaw, Charles Cutler and Arthur Helwig, and at the Yale Summer Art School under Josef Albers and Peter Blume. He exhibited at galleries in New York City and Cincinnati and internationally at exhibitions such as the LX Biennale in Paris, France.
