Edmund Johann Niemann 19th-Century Original Romantic Landscape

Item Details

An antique 19th-century original Romantic rural landscape oil painting on canvas by very well-listed English landscape painter Edmund Johann Niemann (1813 – 1876). The image depicts a peaceful scene overlooking rolling green hills and valleys, populated with bountiful trees and wild vegetation. The arresting image is dominated by natural surroundings, save for a simple dirt path to the right that winds its way along the terrain, as two companions enjoy a leisurely walk together. The tops of the surrounding trees soften under an atmospheric veil of mist that falls upon the pictorial space, evoking a quieting reverence and stillness under the gray, overcast skies, slowly warming with morning light. Artist signature is signed in paint to the lower right. The painting is mounted in an antique beveled wood frame with a natural stained finish and a gilt interior edge. Throughout his significant artistic career, Niemann exhibited his paintings at numerous reputed galleries between 1844 and 1872, including the Royal Academy of Arts; the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Institute of Art in Stockhom; the Glasgow Institute; the Paris Salon; the Liverpool Academy of Arts and the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
