Rembrandt van Rijn Original 1629 Etching "The Small Lion Hunt (with One Lion)"

Item Details

An original etching on fine laid paper mounted to a supporting sheet of laid paper by extremely well-listed and prolific Dutch artist Rembrandt Van Rijn (1606-1669), titled The Small Lion Hunt (with One Lion). This piece was printed from the first and only-known state of this plate, circa 1629. This rare impression features a pair of men engaged in a hunt with a single ferocious lion that charges towards one of them. Rembrandt was a known collector of Persian miniatures, and many art historians speculate that the imagery of this piece was inspired by this collection. The print is a fine, dark impression with a group of small vertical scratches to the upper right corner that are known to be present on the earliest impressions of this plate. A small illegible graphite mark is inscribed to the lower margin. A small collector’s mark is embossed to the paper’s verso. The print is mounted to black backing and matted in white with a gold tone inner fillet. It is presented behind UV Protection glass in a contemporary composite frame with cast surface embellishments, gold tone finish, and a hanging wire. Please see condition details for information on trimming. This print can be found in Rembrandt’s Catalogue Raissone, cataloged as ‘New Holl.(Rembrandt).I.36.29; Holl. XVIII.61.116; Hind 45.6.’ The lot also includes the 1994 edition of the publication The Complete Etchings of Rembrandt: Reproduced in Original Size, edited by Rembrandt van Rijn. The book includes this etching as entry B116.
