Paul Ashbrook Original Maritime Oil Painting on Board

Item Details

An original signed maritime oil painting on board by very well-listed Cincinnati artist Paul Ashbrook (American, 1867 – 1949). In the painting, a line of shadowy sailboats float on a rippling body of water. The boat’s massive white sails beautifully contrast the otherwise dark scene, cast in the deep purple and blue hues of imminent nightfall. The painting is signed in black to the lower right. It is presented in a wooden frame with antiqued gold tone finish. Paul Ashbrook was born in New York in 1867 with the given name of Paul Von Eschenbach. He studied at the Art Students League, under the tutelage of William Merritt Chase, then later at the Cincinnati Art Academy with Frank Duveneck. Early in the 1920s, he worked for the Stonebridge Lithographic Company designing posters for the Barnum and Bailey Circus before traveling in Europe and Mexico, in the later 1920s.
