A vintage collection of Mother Goose books including the first edition of Mother Goose published by The Saalfield Publishing Company, Akron, Ohio, in 1934. This stapled pictorial soft covered edition ‘No 992’ is complete with bright color illustrations by Fern Bisel Peat, a well-respected children’s book illustrator. Seven full size color illustrations with numerous black-and-white illustrations decorate this volume. A first edition, third printing of Mother Goose contains seventy-seven verses with pictures by Tasha Tudor (Oxford University Press, New York, 1944). The numerous illustrations in this edition are soft pastels and monochrome. Mother Goose Complete Melodies: A Collection of Tales, Rhymes and Jingles No. 35 (M.A. Donohue & Company, Chicago) has a color frontispiece with multiple black-and-white illustrations throughout the text. The Annotated Mother Goose: Nursery Rhymes Old and New Arranged and Explained was written by William S. Baring-Gould and Ceil Baring-Gould (Bramhall House, New York, 1962). This volume contains illustrations by well-known illustrators of children’s books including Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, Kate Greenaway, Arthur Rackham, Maxfield Parrish, and early historical woodcuts. All illustrations are monochrome. Three additional titles are Mother Goose Nursery Tales with forty-five illustrations by J.R. Neill (Henry Altemus Company, Philadelphia), Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes (McLoughlin Bros., New York), and Mother Goose: A Treasury of Best-Loved Rhymes (Platt & Munk, New York, 1972).

Condition

Condition ranges from good to fair. Bumped corners, wear to the covers with fraying, torn dust jackets, and scribbling may be evident on individual volumes. The volume by McLoughlin is missing the title page, missing text sections, and loose pages.
