Japanese Inkstone

Item Details

A Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) inkstone. Used in the art of calligraphy and sumi-e (墨絵), a process of ink wash painting. The stone well is mounted on a larger wood base with splayed corner feet and a wooden well cap with a rounded beveled edge. The block bears an inscription on the verso which dates the piece to 1909 (Meiji 42).
