An oil on canvas portrait of a woman with a Chinese vase by Emily Burling Waite (American, 1887 – 1980). The early 20th century life size portrait depicts a brown haired woman with a ‘Gibson Girl’ type hairstyle of the period in a flowing turquoise gown with floral detail in tones of purples and yellows as her right arm rests on a Chinese floor vase. She is set against a white draped background and the canvas is signed ‘EMILY B. WAITE’ to the lower right. The verso of the canvas with a paper label reading ’51 1/2 X 77/B.B, store. This may refer to the era when Waite had a studio located in the Back Bay area of Boston, Massachusetts. The subject of this painting also appears in item 16BOS080-191.
