A 1972 Olympische Spiele München poster by listed artist Jacob Lawrence (American, 1917-2000). A colorful and dynamic design, the poster was commissioned for the Munich Olympics Games and was a tribute by Lawrence to the accomplishments of black track athletes, and held special importance due to Jesse Owen’s historic record of four gold medals held at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The poster is mounted on linen, displayed under glass in a narrow black metal frame.
Jacob Lawrence is best known for his modernist paintings with depictions of genre urban life. His style can be described as Synthetic Cubism and his paintings are narratives of the black migration from the South to the urban North.
