Japanese Moriage Phoenix Medallion Motif Vase

Item Details

A tall Japanese ceramic vase. This features a flared lip, a tapered banded neck, wide shoulders with applied foliate loop handles, and a tall tapering body with a slightly flaring foot. The vase has been glazed with a deep rusty burgundy red. It features the heavy application of thick glaze, or moriage, in a vibrant medallion depicting a stylized phoenix with a scrolling border. On the obverse, there is a delicately painted depiction of a blossomed branch. It is marked underneath in two red Japanese characters of what appears to be ‘右土’ or ‘右工’, however no clear artist or kiln attribution could be made.
