Item Details
A John Morgan oil on canvas. This still life depicts a young girl with blue eyes and blonde hair sitting on a rock near her dog on a sunny day in a green field. The artist’s signature is present to the lower right in paint. The painting is presented in an ornate gold tone frame with a wire hang to the back.
The back of the frame features a label marked ’Britnell’s Art Gallery Toronoto. This gallery was demolished sometime in 1931 to make room for the Church Street extension. The gallery was owned by the Britnell family who also owned Albert Britnell Bookstore in Toronto.
John Morgan (British, 1822–1886) was born in Pentonville, London. As a young man was apprenticed to a business which designed frames for Gillow, Jackson and Graham. He studied at the School of Design at Somerset House and spent time in Paris under Couture and Delarouche. Morgan frequently showed his work at the Royal Academy and the British Institution.
Condition
There is some craquelure to the paint from age. There are a couple of places in the painting that have surface scratches to the paint. The frame has wear from use and age.
