An original 1977 oil painting on board with carved embellishments by renowned contemporary American nautical artist and craftsman Lawrence Forbes-Wolfe (New Hampshire, 20th century). The painting is typical of Forbes-Wolfe’s subject matter, depicting an airy nautical scene. A great blue heron stands in the foreground, its poised form emerging from a cloud of fog. In the distance, a seemingly abandoned fishing boat rises from the same cloud. Delicately engraved linework on the edges of the boat’s form and within the bird’s feather add dimension to this remarkable piece. The painting is signed to the lower right. It is presented in a wooden frame with a stripe of olive green finish. It is dated and signed again to the verso, where there is also a hanging wire.
