Original Nepali Mithila Painting

Item Details

An original Nepali Mithila gouache folk painting on canvas, also known as a Madhubani painting. This incredibly ornate and intricate piece is part of a long history of Mithila paintings created by Nepali women in Nepal’s Mithila state and India’s Bihar state. The paintings were traditionally created with natural dyes applied with sticks and twigs, though this piece seems to use more modern gouache paints and an extremely fine brush. These pieces depict intricate scenes of religious figures, animals, and other aspects of traditional Nepali everyday life and culture. This particular piece seems to have a special emphasis on religious life, depicting several Hindu gods and saints scattered throughout a stunning garden. The painting is unsigned. It is matted in navy and presented behind glass in a carved wooden frame with gold tone finish and a hanging wire. A handwritten note to the verso says the piece was purchased in Nepal in 1998.
