Georg Friedrich Schmidt 1763 Etching after Rembrandt

Item Details

An antique 18th-century etching on laid paper by well-listed and notable German master engraver Georg Friedrich Schmidt (1712 – 1775), dated 1763, after a portrait painting of a young man by Rembrandt. Schmidt’s etchings after Rembrandt are noted as ranking with the very best German artwork of the 18th century. This image, rendered in stunning detail and craftsmanship, depicts a prestigious young man wearing fine garments with embellished trim, and a hat on his head. He wears his hair long and sports a manicured mustache, his eyebrows raised in coy charm. Inscribed text in plate to upper left reads, ‘Rembrandt pinx. G. F. Schmidt feut aqua forti 1763’. Inscribed text in plate to the bottom reads, ‘Du Cabinet de Monsieur le Comte de Kameke.’ This fine and historically notable etching is mounted behind white mat, under acrylic glass, in a beveled wood frame with a speckled silver tone finish with black exterior edges. A hanging wire is attached to the verso.
