A two-volume set of Uncle Tom’s Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This is a first edition set of the famous book, published in 1852 by John P. Jewett & Company. It is a later printing, with the words ‘Fortieth Thousand’ appearing on the title page. Each is bound in blind-stamped boards covered in brown cloth with gilt illustration. An inscription in volume one details the life of R.W. Hubbard, a confederate soldier who was held captive at Camp Morton, and died of consumption (tuberculosis) shortly after his marriage- all written by his niece. Inscribed to the library of ‘R.W. Hubbard, Brookville, Indiana.’

- volume one: long inscription, torn/partially missing spine, chipped ends, bumped corners, cloth peeling from front, extensive foxing, broken hinges, back cover barely attached; volume two: missing spine completely, bumped corners and edges, damage to cloth, dampstains, inscriptions, and extensive foxing; poor binding to both.
