African Yorùbá Beaded Headdress

Item Details

An African, Yorùbá, bead embroidered headdress featuring a sculptural bird to the top in red with yellow bead trim, atop a conical cap. The cap is entirely embroidered in seed beads depicting birds in red, yellow, blue, and white, with yellow and blue strands of beads hanging from the bottom hem. This elaborate headdress would have likely been worn for ceremonial purposes. The Yorùbá people – the largest ethnic group in Africa – originate from a cultural area of Africa known as Yorubaland, overlapping central and south Benin, as well as north and southwestern Nigeria.
